What’s your name? | |
Liz Battersby | |
What is the name of your business?
SWEET | |
How long have you been trading?
Over 10 years | |
What products do you sell?
Fairy floss, snow cones, pop corn, soft drinks
What sells the best? | |
Fairy floss except on very hot days when the snow cones ‘rock’
What markets do you trade at?
Phillip Island, Mornington Peninsula, South East suburbs of Melbourne. Trade more at events than markets
How did it all begin? | |
I spent many years on Scout committees. We often hired a floss machine for fund raising. It always brought in quite a bit of money, so when the children grew up I decided I would buy one for myself and just do local fetes etc. I used only a market umbrella at first, then a gazebo and now a van. Some of my friends call me Flossy and some new friends don’t even know my real name lol
What do you like most about being a stallholder?
I love interacting with kids, and with adults who are just out to have a pleasant time. I love being part of the event – enjoying the entertainment, and getting in to the spirit of the event. For example when attending a Highland event, there were tents for the competitors each with their name on eg TEAM McDONALD etc so I quickly made up a sign for the van that said TEAM McFLOSS lol Fun Fun Fun
What do you like least about being a stallholder?
My aching back at the end of a long day lol Worrying about what can go wrong – everything from a flat tyre, traffic jam etc to a storm or power outage at the event.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Still doing fairy floss but being able to spend more time on the road going to events further afield and making a holiday of it. (Oh – with no debt lol)
Any funny stories to share about your time as a stallholder?
Most stories are not funny at the time lol Wheel fell off the van on the freeway and rolled past me. Wasps nest was disturbed near my van and they quickly moved in. I was bitten about 20 times, I was standing on them there were so many, and my customers had to shout their order at me from a safe distance and then run to the van to collect and run away again FAST. It didn’t stop me serving and it didn’t stop them buying lol.
What one piece of advice would you give to a new stallholder?
You must be passionate about what you do. That energy will come across to your audience. You are selling yourself as well as your product.
